Melbourne Music Week have revealed their flagship venue for 2015, and we’ll be heading underground. This year’s pop-up will be the disused basement and adjoining rooms of the Former Royal Women’s Hospital on Swanston Street.

Kicking off the proceedings at the MMW Opening Night Gypsy & The Cat, The Harpoons and Dorsal Fins are set to bring the 150 year old building back to life on Friday the 13th of November.

Over the years the hidden site has seen ground-breaking medical advancements take place, including the first ever IVF quadruplets and now this fascinating slice of uniquely Melbourne history will provide an exciting canvas for cutting-edge installations and programming.  This year will also see the first carbon neutral flagship venue for Melbourne Music Week, with all carbon emissions measured and offset as MMW concludes.

MMW has also commissioned Swell to reinvent 12 of the Former Royal Women’s Hospital’s forgotten rooms, with secret one-off performances that redefine the way punters experience live music. A multi-sensory immersion supported by Eventbrite, Swell blends music with unexpected art and design elements to create an evocative soundscape adventure throughout MMW.

The full Melbourne Music Week program will be announced next week.
