Five By Five: Travis and Marie from Big League Please introduce yourself. Travis, I sing the songs in Big League. Marie, I play bass and tell Trav he’s doing a good job singing the songs What can you tell us about your debut single “Skyscraper Tan”? T: Skyscraper Tan was written in 2012, I’d purchased my first really good guitar (a Les Paul Special) and was getting really enthusiastic about playing. I’d only recently heard Pavement for the first time and was super inspired by this ‘New’ style of Indie Rock (my 90’s was mainly groups starting with ‘Spice’ and ending with ‘uman Nature’). M: We’d just got back from driving around the US where I bought a cheap bass, and I didn’t have a job to come back to so I made Trav teach me some of these songs I’d heard him noodling around with. It spiralled out of control from there really. Tell us about your experience in the local scene as Melbourne-based artists? T: We started gigging early last year, since then we’ve been playing about a show a month. The more we play the more we seem to get invited to play, it’s been great! The stage fright seems to be sorting itself out, and more people are coming to the shows. M: We’ve met a bunch of great dudes too, everyone has been super nice and supportive, no matter how much I felt like throwing up. What is your greatest live music experience? T: Catching Blur at Coachella. When a band you thought you’d never see, reform and are still fighting fit, it doesn’t get much sweeter. And we got right up the front because the Stone Roses were on before and no one wanted to see them (idiots!). M: I messaged my dad mid-gig to let him know they‘d flown in Phil Daniels just to trot out in a tracksuit for Parklife. Glorious. You can go to any fictional place for a day. Where would it be and what is the first thing you do? T: I have this reoccurring dream where I’m to play Indiana Jones in a trilogy of films the Disney Corporation is going to make, and Harrison Ford is gonna mentor me in how to approach the role, but when I meet him for the first time, we never get past discussing whether I should call him ‘Harrison’ or ‘Mr.Ford’. Resolving that would definitely have to be the first thing. M: Biodome. Purple Sticky Punch.
