Leaps & Bounds, the City of Yarra’s annual live music festival, is back – bigger and better – for its second year. Kicking off This Friday, the 4th of July, and running through to the 20th, the festival will have over 100 events in venues large and small throughout the City of Yarra. From Longplay in North Fitzroy to The Corner in Richmond and all manner of venues in between, some amazing shows and events are happening. We’ve come up with a quick list of things we definitely recommend catching.

The Darling Downs at The Toff, July 27th

The Living Legends Series

Three of Melbourne’s best talents are getting some well deserved recognition with the Living Legends Series at The Tote. Kim Salmon, Spencer P Jones and Charlie Owen will each be recognised as a cast of incredible musicians spend a night playing tracks from their respective catalogues. Featuring Gareth Liddiard, Mick Harvey, Dan Kelly and many more, it seems the only people not playing will be the three honoured musicians themselves. Get ready for some great tracks from The Scientists, Kim Salmon and The Surrealists, The Johnnys, The Divinyls, Tendrils and – of course – a whole lot of Beasts of Bourbon.

Leaps & Bounds Bus Tours With Bruce Milne

They say you learn something new every day. Well every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the festival you can learn plenty about the incredible musical history of the Yarra. Melbourne’s resident musicologist, Bruce Milne, will be sharing his wealth of knowledge on the Leaps and Bounds Bus Tours, visiting some important and interesting musical sites through the City of Yarra. The tours are limited to 18 passengers so they’ll be nice and intimate though they may be hard to get into.

Bakehouse Open Day & Street Party

An opportunity to visit the hallowed Bakehouse Studio is something you definitely shouldn’t miss. The headquarters of SLAM and the sacred ‘home’ of some of Melbourne’s most famous exports are opening their doors to the public for the first time ever on the 12th of July and having a street party to celebrate! With performances from Harmony and The Impossible No Goods featuring BJ Morriszonkle from 11AM, and a collaboration with some of Australia’s leading visual artists on show, this is a must-do.

Diggin In The Yarra

Record stores all across the Yarra are getting in on the Leaps and Bounds Music Festival fun with instore performances, special sale events and giveaways on the 19th of July. There’s a whole bunch of stores in the Yarra getting in on the action, so get along to your favourites and support physical shops!

Ali Bird and Aarght Records Present Sunday Afternoons in July

Everyone loves a Sunday session and Ali Bird and Aarght Records have put together a great lineup of performers for the three Sundays in the festival at The CopaCabana. With Dick Diver, Hierophants, The Galaxy Folk, Harmony and Bitch Prefect all on the lineup, as well as an Independent Record Fair, there’s a lot of entertainment on offer for only $8 on the door. That’s without even mentioning the cheap bloody marys and vegan cupcakes!
